Amazon reviews of Cesar's Way
Mrs. G. A. White "GW" (UK)
I find it so sad when an author such as this publishes a book just to make money out of poor unsuspecting members of the public. It sounds so good to us humans to be "the pack leader" of our pet dogs - but sorry to tell you the dog does not cross species in hierarchy, so you cant be pack leader! Can you imagine what it would be like in the wild if all pack animals crossed species to become the pack leader? Come on humans wake up and smell the coffee!

I have bought this book and hoped to find a solution for my two dogs: one seems to go deaf for any kind of "Come here" as soon as a squirrel is in sight, the other one is lovely with humans but quite a bully with other dogs. I didn't find any answer. To me the book is like a biography: nice to know that Cesar has treated so many celebrities' dogs but he bored me out of my pants with his endless pages about his humble upbringing in Mexico. This is not what I want to know when I buy a book about dog training. The questions I really needed to know were not answered. Sorry, this book didn't do it for me at all. Seen all your positive ratings, I am decided to read it again, but I still don't think that I have "overread" the answer to my questions. Is there any page where he gives anything else than just a more than vague advice? I can't find it.

Never has a theory been so over-used and under-proven as the Dominance myth. Based on flawed research, incorrectly interpreted and used as a panacea for every problem. If you want a shut down, ticking time bomb of a dog that you have to manage, and you're happy employing a sharp kick to the ribs, or a prong collar, then follow cesar milan and I'm sure you'll be very happy. Your dog won't be but that doesn't seem to matter, does it? The only thing he's right about is that dogs need exercise, both mental and physical and that they need rules and consistency - but that's hardly revolutionary, is it? If you want a dog with its own self control, that doesn't need you to constantly put it in its place or tell it to stop barking, then look at the really great dog people like Kay Lawrence or Jean Donaldson. Don't buy this - give your dog a break

I have experience in dog training having formal qualifications and I am now studying for a foundation degree in canine behaviour and training. I have read many books and Cesar Millan's methods are incredibly outdated. They are based on the idea that dogs are like wolves; however, that's like saying we should look to chimpanzees for parenting advice! The theory isn't even based on wild wolves behaving naturally, it was all done on captive packs, which behave differently. His methods do not look at why a dog behaves a certain way but make the assumption that the only reason a dog becomes a problem is because he is 'dominant' and therefore the dog needs to be put in its place. This is clearly untrue as dogs do things because they are advantageous but not because they are dominant necessarily. All that is needed is positive training, something you won't find in this book.
I urge any dog owner who follows dominance theory to read 'Dominance, Fact or Fiction' by Barry Eaton. An excellent puppy book is 'Before and After Getting Your Puppy' by Dr Ian Dunbar and a great general dog book is 'The Culture Clash' by Jean Donaldson.

Is it just me, do I imagine that every time I see Cesar he gets bitten? You'd do better to get Jan Fennell's "The Dog Listener" and save on the band aids.

Having met several dog owners using this man’s 'techniques' I feel very sad for the dogs. I don’t like his methods which i find unkind and unnecessary - of all the programmes about dog training this is the most dangerous in my opinion as people follow his way blindly.

I was so disappointed by this book that I have given it away to charity. I wouldn't have given it to anyone I know who has an interest in dogs, and I wouldn't recommend it. The information that I was looking for - Cesar's take on how to have your dogs behave as you'd like them to while providing them with a happy and secure life - simply wasn't there. For the few snippets of rather loose and outdated info that were buried in the text, I had to wade through pages of Cesar's self-congratulatory 'look how clever I am and see how well I've done' autobiography, with far too many crass references to his wealthy celebrity clients (does the size of Oprah Winfrey's ranch with its ocean view really matter in a book that I thought was about dog behaviour? I don't think so).

Cesar Millan may be popular, but I would recommend anyone to look at other books by dog trainers who use 'positive methods' first. The idea of 'pack leadership' is outdated. Don't rely on this guy!

Millan has no business calling himself a "dog whisperer" or a dog "trainer" for that matter. What are his credentials, where was his education......that will tell you how much he truly knows. If I were Paul Owens [see link on left] I would be completed disgusted in having people mistake him for Millan.
Millan's methods are outdated, cruel and inhumane..... hanging a dog by a choke chain or doing the "alpha-roll over" to prove who is dominant in the household - are his means of "training".... how would he feel is somebody treated his children with force and intimidation...
Intimidating, choking, kicking and pining dogs to the ground to get them to respond is ridiculous and should not be allowed on TV. Not one of the dogs he works with has any type of good body language, all the body language they show is fear and stress.
It should tell you something that there is warning at the beginning of his TV show. If his methods work so well, why have a warning about his methods! As I said ..... check out his professional Training Credentials.....he has none, that should say it all right there!

Read Cesar's book. It was pretty bad. Made me feel at war with my dogs. A lot of bullying.
